What Is a Training Max?
A Training Max is not the same as a one-rep max (1RM).
Your Training Max should be a weight you can lift for one confident rep on any day of the week, even when you’re tired or not feeling your best. On a good day, it’s typically a weight you could perform for 2–3 solid reps.
Because all percentages and intensities in the program are calculated from your Training Max, it should not be an all-time PR or a lift you’ve only hit once under perfect conditions.
Think of your Training Max as a reliable, repeatable baseline — not a max-effort test.
Why We Use a Training Max
Programming off a conservative Training Max allows for:
Consistent progress on both good and bad days
Better recovery and long-term sustainability
More accurate loading as volume and intensity increase
Starting slightly conservatively helps ensure you can complete the prescribed work week-to-week while still creating room for PRs as strength builds.
When Should I Adjust My Training Max?
The app will guide you.
Each training week includes built-in indicators that suggest when a Training Max adjustment is appropriate — for example:
Completing more reps than expected on AMRAP sets
Reaching or exceeding specific thresholds on Ascending sets
As you progress, your Training Max may:
Increase beyond the original 2–3 rep guideline
Eventually surpass weights you’ve previously hit as a 1RM
This is intentional and expected. Your Training Max is designed to evolve as your strength improves.
